STATEMENT ON WORLD KIDNEY DAY 2025

On this World Kidney Day, the Ghana College of Pharmacists joins the global community in raising awareness about kidney health and advocating for measures to prevent and manage kidney disease. This year’s theme, “Are Your Kidneys OK? – Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health”, highlights the importance of early detection and proactive measures in safeguarding kidney function and preventing complications.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) continues to pose a significant public health challenge, affecting millions worldwide, including a growing number of Ghanaians. Late diagnosis, limited access to nephrology services, and high treatment costs often result in poor health outcomes. As pharmacists, we play a critical role in promoting kidney health through medication therapy management, patient education, and policy advocacy aimed at improving access to essential medicines and services.

Pharmacists serve as frontline healthcare professionals in the early detection and prevention of kidney disease by:

  • Conducting routine screenings for risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, which are leading causes of CKD.
  • Educating patients on the importance of lifestyle modifications, including proper hydration, healthy eating, and exercise, to reduce the risk of kidney disease.
  • Reviewing medications to identify nephrotoxic drugs and providing safer alternatives or dosage adjustments to protect kidney function.
  • Counseling patients on the correct use of medications to prevent drug-induced kidney damage and interactions that may worsen kidney health.
  • Partnering with healthcare providers to implement early intervention strategies that slow disease progression and improve patient outcomes.
  • Encouraging regular kidney function tests for at-risk individuals to ensure timely diagnosis and management.

The Ghana College of Pharmacists reaffirms its commitment to supporting kidney health initiatives by:

  • Promoting responsible medication use to prevent drug-induced kidney damage.
  • Advocating for policies that ensure affordable and accessible treatment options for all.
  • Enhancing pharmacist-led interventions in kidney disease prevention and management through specialist training and continuous professional devepment programmes.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to improve awareness and early screening programmes.

We encourage all Ghanaians to prioritise kidney health by staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet, controlling blood pressure and diabetes, and undergoing regular health screenings.

We also call on our Specialist Pharmacists and Consultant Pharmacists in the field of nephrology and related areas to continue their invaluable contributions in patient care, research, and advocacy. Their expertise is essential in optimising therapy, preventing complications, and ensuring better health outcomes for individuals living with kidney disease.

Let’s take action to reduce the burden of kidney disease and enhance the well-being of our communities!
