Course Overview
The Ghana College of Pharmacists introduced the “Pharm Africa Basic Oncology Pharmacy Training Program” to train Specialist Pharmacists in pediatric oncology in Ghana, as well as accept residents from other African countries in the future. This is to help Pharmacists in Ghana and across Africa acquire the relevant knowledge and skills to manage cases of pediatric oncology in the region.
This training is intended to practically equip Pharmacists with requisite skills to participate in providing pharmaceutical care to patients receiving chemotherapy as part of the multi-modal approach to the treatment of cancers. The programme will take place at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana.
Course Objectives
After completing this two-month training course, the trainee shall be able to:
- Appreciate the set-up of an Oncology Pharmacy Unit.
- Understand and appreciate the need for essential equipment in the oncology set-up.
- Properly store and manage Cytotoxic Medicines.
- Properly audit Prescription Orders for patients receiving Chemotherapy.
- Safely and appropriately Prepare / Reconstitute Chemotherapy
- Adequately labelled chemotherapy.
- Appropriately and Safely Handle Cytotoxic medicines and cytotoxic wastes.
- Appreciate the role of the Pharmacist in the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) responsible for treating Cancers.
- Participate in Clinical Ward Rounds and Tumor Board Meetings.
- Acquire skills in provision of Drug Information to all clients.
- Be able to Counsel Patients or their caregivers in the safe handling of cytotoxic medicines and wastes.
Course Description
Topics to be treated include:
- A brief overview of Cancer Biology, etiology, epidemiology, and tumor classification.
- Classification and mechanism of action of anti-neoplastics
- Risks in handling Cytotoxic Medicines and how they are managed.
- Setting up of an Oncology Pharmacy Unit.
- Proper storage and transportation of Cytotoxic Medicines
- Best Practices in handling of Cytotoxic Medicines.
- Auditing Prescription Orders for patients receiving Chemotherapy
- Management of stock levels of medicines.
- Save and appropriate preparation/reconstitution of chemotherapy.
- Adequate Labeling of chemotherapy.
- Appropriate and Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Medicines and Cytotoxic Wastes.
- Management of cytotoxic spills
- The role of the Pharmacist in the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) responsible for treating Cancers.
- Administration of chemotherapy and management of extravasations (if they occur).
Admission process
We have a simple admission process
Two months
The basic requirements for entry into this training programme are as follows:
- A Bachelor of Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution.
- A registered pharmacist in good standing with the pharmacists’ regulator in one’s country of practice.
Tuition – USD 1,000.00
All expenses including accommodation, food and transportation will be borne by the resident. Residents who may require assistance finding accommodation can contact the College via email paediatriconcology.gcpharm@gmail.com.
