Course Overview
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, KNUST, has run the MPhil programme in Clinical Pharmacy, MPhil programme in Pharmacology and MSc programme in Pharmaceutical Technology under the School of Graduate studies of the university for many years. The Ghana College of Pharmacists is mandated under law to run relevant professional programmes (membership and fellowship) leading to specialisation in pharmacy in relevant disciplines to improve rational use of medications, including the safety and management of medicines in the hospitals and other health facilities in the country. Both institutions reasoned that the Joint Qualification Programme will improve the professional competency as well as the scientific and academic strength of graduates from the College. The programme will also broaden their horizons in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Technology, and Clinical Pharmacy research and practice. Additionally, this will prepare graduates to support both bedside and interactive teaching in our health institutions and enhance staff development efforts in pharmacy schools nationwide. It will also position graduates involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing industries to take teaching roles at universities, further boosting staff development.
Admission requirements
The duration of the joint MPhil/MSc and Membership programme is three(3) years and to gain admission to the programme, an applicant must satisfy the following minimum entry requirements:
1. Have a B. Pharm with a minimum of a second-class degree or equivalent or a Pharm D degree with CWA of 60% and above.
2. Be a registered pharmacist who has practiced for a minimum of 2 years post-registration.
3. Must have passed an interview conducted for the purpose of admission into this programme.
NOTE: All prospective applicants are advised to visit the KNUST admissions portal and review the admission requirements for the relevant MPhil/MSc programme to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria.
Application for Existing GCPharm Candidates
Candidates who are already enrolled in the Ghana College of Pharmacists and are eligible to participate in the Joint Qualification Programme should apply through the KNUST Admissions Portal for the relevant MPhil programme.
After submitting their KNUST application, they should notify the Ghana College of Pharmacists by email, providing their name, College candidate number(where applicable), preferred Joint Qualification Programme track, and proof of KNUST application.
Notifications should be sent to training.unit@gcpharm.edu.gh (This notification will enable the College to coordinate the Joint Qualification Programme admissions process with KNUST).
application for Other Candidates
Eligible pharmacists who are not currently candidates of the Ghana College of Pharmacists and wish to enrol on the Joint Qualification
Programme are required to submit two separate applications:
1. Apply for admission to the Ghana College of Pharmacists through the College’s admissions
process.
2. Submit an application through the KNUST Admissions Portal for the corresponding
postgraduate degree programme.
After submitting their KNUST application, they should notify the Ghana College of Pharmacists by email, providing their name, College candidate number(where applicable), preferred Joint Qualification Programme track, and proof of KNUST application.
Notifications should be sent to training.unit@gcpharm.edu.gh (This notification will enable the College to coordinate the Joint Qualification Programme admissions process with KNUST).
Course Objectives
The programme aims to widen the knowledge base and provide opportunity to develop the research skills of students in pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical manufacturing and production, in pharmacology and clinical pharmacy practice.
The objective is to provide an individualised and flexible experiential learning that will develop the ability of graduates to apply research skills and knowledge in the provision of pharmaceutical services in the health system.
Specifically, the programme should enhance the ability of the graduates:
- I. To function as an independent pharmacist practitioner through the development of skills and competencies needed to provide comprehensive advanced pharmaceutical service.
- II. To provide practising pharmacists with advanced knowledge, skills and competence relevant in the practice of areas of specific special track.
- III. To stimulate lifelong learining attitude in practicing pharmacists to effectively communicate with other health care professionals and consumers and foster concepts of inter-professional collabration.
- IV. To promote and incorporate the principles of the drug and medication distribution system, informatics, and safe medication practices into daily practice and teaching.
- V. To sharpen the leadership, academic and research skills necessary for clinical plharmacy practice, teaching and development in tertiary institutions.
