Prof. kwame ohene buabeng

Professor Kwame Ohene Buabeng is a Clinical Pharmacologist and Professor of Pharmacy Practice. He was a former Head of Department of Pharmacy Practice, and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. Prof Ohene Buabeng was also former Director of the Institute of Health Research, University of Health and Allied Sciences(UHAS), Ho, Ghana and currently outgoing Dean of the School of Pharmacy, UHAS, Ho.

Prof. Ohene Buabeng has been the Vice President of the Ghana College of Pharmacists and Chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Care of the College until June 2026. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Pharmacists and Fellow of the West Africa Postgraduate College of Pharmacists.

In addition, Prof Ohene Buabeng is Co-Chair of the Multi-sectoral, Multi-stakeholder Antimicrobial Resistance Coordinating Committee (AMRCC-Policy Platform) and also Lead of the Technical Working Group of Antimicrobial Stewardship in Ghana. Prof. Ohene Buabeng serves as a Member of the Tri-Chair of Global Health Security Agenda-AMR Action Packages, with colleagues AMR experts/advocates in Parkistan and USA as Co-Chair.

He consults for WHO on Antimicrobial Stewardship issues and has contributed to the development and review of educational modules for training Health Managers, Administrators and Students in Africa and across the globe on AMR and Antimicrobial Stewardship. He is also Consultant for a collaborative initiative between the University of New Mexico, Pfizer, Ministry of Health Ghana, Project ECHO and the American Society of Microbiology, to strengthen the capacity of health professionals in Africa and Latin America on Antimicrobial stewardship with infection prevention and control imbedded. (The initiative is referred to as TEACH AMS ECHO).  

Prof Ohene Buabeng is a Member of the National Medicines Selection Committee for the development of Essential Medicines List and Standard Treatment Guidelines in Ghana, and Member of the Steering Committee of Health Technology Assessment, MOH, Ghana. In addition, Prof. Ohene Buabeng is a Member of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He is a registered Pharmacist with B. Pharm degree from KNUST, Kumasi; MSc in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Aberdeen, UK; PhD in Pharmacy (Health Systems/Pharmacy Practice and Drug Utilization Research) from University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland, and Certificate in Public Health Science, Research Design and Ethics from the Nordic School of Public Health, Gothenburg, Sweden.

His research interests are in optimization of pharmacotherapy, prevention and control of Cardio-Metabolic Disorders and Infectious Diseases, including sexually transmitted infections, and has passion for patient safety and Antimicrobial Stewardship. Before joining the Academia, Prof Ohene Buabeng was a Senior Pharmacist at the Agogo Hospital of the Presbyterian Health Services, Ghana.  He has over twenty years of experience as a scholar in academia, mentoring students and teaching courses in nursing, pharmacy and medicine in Ghana and Abroad, as well as in the Ghana and West Africa Colleges of Pharmacists. 

Prof Ohene Buabeng has published extensively in the area of Infectious Diseases and Cardiovascular Health. He and has good track record of conference participation, supporting mentees or presenting outcomes of scientific works in his area of expertise. He is an external examiner (both Graduate and Under graduate studies), and assessor for faculty promotions in Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacy Practice for Universities in Ghana, Nairobi, Kenya, and UK (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine & Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine).  

Professor Ohene Buabeng is a reviewer for several refereed Journals including the European Journal Clinical Pharmacology, BMJ open, PloS One, Malaria Journal, BMC Public Health; Africa Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology; Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice, Scientific Reports, Hospital Practice among others.
