Pharm.Rev. Jonathan Y. Martey

Rev Jonathan Y. Martey is a Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs Consultant. He is a pharmacist by profession, and holds a Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis & Quality Control and also an Executive MBA in Human Resource Management. He is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Pharmacists with specialization in Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance. He is an accomplished expert in medicines regulation, regulatory compliance and quality assurance, and an expert in quality management system design, installation and implementation.

He has over thirty years extensive practical knowledge and experience in standardization, medicines regulation, GMP-audit inspection of pharmaceutical plants, pharmaceutical analysis and quality control, training of laboratory managers and quality control personnel, training of industry personnel in current GMP requirements and provision of technical guidance for testing laboratories towards accreditation.

In the area of audits of the pharmaceutical quality system, Rev Martey has been a lead GMP inspector in the audit of over 40 pharmaceutical plants across India, Malaysia, Egypt, Germany and Slovenia, during the period of his employment with the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority. In the dispensation and administration of key regulatory functions of the Ghana FDA, he contributed to the development of guidelines and in the training of both staff and stakeholders in the application of the guidelines, including guidelines applicable to registration of medicines, advertisement of pharmaceutical products, licensing of manufacturing facilities, GMP, pharmacovigilance, import and export of pharmaceuticals and guidelines for the GMP-audit inspections of pharmaceutical plants as well as clinical trials.

Between July 2011 and December 2012, he was engaged by UNIDO as an Expert in Accreditation & Conformity Assessment under the EU-funded West Africa Quality Programme (WAQP). Under the Programme, he provided beside other things, technical guidance and training for selected food and medicines testing laboratories in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia testing to build capacity towards accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025.

Between 2010 and 2018, Rev Martey served as a member of the WHO’s International Advisory Panel for International Pharmacopoeia and Pharmaceutical Preparations. Between 2011 and 2018, he served as an expert in pharmceutiucal quality assurance for the West Africa Health Organization and currently he is the Head of the Faculty of Quality Assurance, a position he has held since January 2019.
